Bigotry Against Gays Not Tolerated by Montana Tea Party
08th September 2010
From Yahoo! News – HELENA, Mont. – The president of a Montana tea party group has been kicked out of the organization for an exchange on his Facebook page that appeared to condone violence against homosexuals.
The Big Sky Tea Party Association’s board of directors voted Sunday to remove Tim Ravndal from the group after members learned of the online conversation in July that began with a comment about an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit over rights for same-sex couples.
Ravndal, who was elected to the position in August, apologized over the weekend after being contacted by The Great Falls Tribune, which first reported the story. That didn’t halt the board’s decision.
“We continually make it known that we will not tolerate bigoted dialogue, behavior or messages at our functions, our meetings or within our ranks,” chairman Jim Walker said in a statement. “If a person demonstrates bigotry relative to sex, ethnicity, etc., they are not welcome in our organization. The Tea Party movement is about standing up for individual freedom for everyone.”
The Utah Log Cabin Republicans would like to applaud The Big Sky Tea Party Association, first of all for it’s policy regarding bigotry relative to sex, ethnicity, etc. and more importantly for sticking to their guns and upholding that policy. Read More…
Discrimination is Alive and Well in Utah
29th May 2010
I thought you might find this interesting and pretty darn discriminatory. So congress is discussing the repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy for the military. So I called The House of Representatives, and asked to speak with Jason Chaffetz. They put me through to an assistant. Here are the notes from my conversation with him after I requested that Rep. Chaffetz vote to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
Rep. Chaffetz office at 3:00pm on May 26th.
He said that Rep. Chaffetz does not support the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, because he feels that it protects both those who are gay and those who are not in the military. He asked under what circumstances would there be a need for repealing the law. I told him so that people would be able to go where they want, date who they want, and talk about their life just like everybody else without the fear of being fired. He asked where would you want to go. I said the bar, specifically a gay bar in off time. Or to a highly social function with a gay partner. He said the interpretation of whether that violated the rule would be up to those in charge in that area. I asked how anybody would know what those in charge considered a violation of the law. He said you could ask them. He then said that the military isn’t about sexuality and sexuality shouldn’t be discussed in the military, and that sexual things are inappropriate to be discussed in most businesses. I said that I believe there is a difference between sex acts and sexuality, and that in any business discussing sex acts would be considered harassment. However, what I’m talking about is saying things that are non-sexual, but would indicate your preference in the sex of your partner. I then asked why we shouldn’t be able to discuss what we did in our off time with our partner or significant other, so long as it wasn’t sexual in nature. I then said, if you mentioned your partner’s name or if they asked what your partner’s name was it may be very obvious that this is a person of the same sex. Such as if you told them that your partner’s name is Jason. He said that those were things that gay people should probably stay away from talking about to others in the military. I told him that this didn’t seem fair that heterosexuals should be able to talk about their everyday nonsexual lives, but gay people shouldn’t do this. He said that it was to protect them and others in the military, and to ensure that heterosexuals in the military weren’t demoralized. I asked if there weren’t a large number of things that could demoralize people in the military that weren’t legislated such as this. He said there probably were, but this one the congress decided to legislate. I told him that’s why I’m calling to have them change this. He said that Rep. Chaffetz doesn’t want to change it because he feels it protects people in the military from being demoralized. I asked him to please ask Rep. Chaffetz to please reconsider his position on this, because I do not think it’s fair or morally right to have gay people be forced to follow a code of conduct that others don’t have to follow. He said he would pass my comments along to him.
Wow. I’m sure glad that they are protecting us from…….. something…… er…. making sure that non-gays feel comfortable…. Or …. Something. I guess that makes it all worth it to have gays protect the country and just make sure that they don’t talk about anything too personal with anybody. Because risking your life is just a really casual thing? Just like making sure that you have to hide and live in fear of doing anything or talking with somebody because you could be fired. Hopefully the firing for talking about your family and life at home will occur before you are killed in the course of battle.
Nice..

Pre-Convention Delegate Welcome Party
20th April 2010
This is a special invitation to all Log Cabin members, friends, and allies. Utah LCR along with the College Republicans on the U of U campus are hosting a special Senate Candidate Town Hall meeting this Wednesday, April 21st. We have already confirmed that six of the eight candidates will be there to answer questions and share their ideas with Republican State Delegates. We have 300 seats to fill and expect around 200 state delegates so there is plenty of room for all of you and your partners, friends, and guests to join with us.
If you are a state delegate it is critically important for you to attend as the candidates really want to meet each of you and find out where you stand on the issues affecting all of us every day, both GLBT issues and all issues in general. Even if you’re not a state delegate we still need you there to show these candidates who their constituents are, and how many of us that support GLBT issues will be voting in November.
The meeting will start at 7:00pm in the Saltair room in the Olpin Student Union Building. This room is in the northwest corner on the main floor past the main ballroom. Just follow the signs or ask at the main reception desk for directions. We have put together a very informative program with questions each candidate will need to respond to. After each group of questions all of you will be able to vote on weather the candidate did answer the question or not. This way the candidates will know immediately weather they answered or just skirted the issue right then, and that all the state delegate in attendance will know, too.
We have also invited all of the media and they need to see which candidates can actually answer these questions and where they really stand. Not all of our questions are GLBT related, but they are all relevant to what is happening in our daily lives such as health care, budget deficits, immigration, and more. If you really want to know where these Senate candidates stand then BE THERE! If there is a specific questions that you really want an answer to, please reply to this email with the question so we can get it included if possible.

Our next monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, April 6th at 7:00pm in The Salt Lake City Library in the lower level.
