I think you kind of lead with the weak points. The key points I think you should have made, were:

-vast majority of military benefits available to only hetero soldiers

-the fact that forcing soldiers to lie is a violation of the code of conduct put forth by OPM

-by discharging highly trained soldiers we are squandering public dollars

the list goes on... I do love your point about legislating "demoralizing" entities.

Imagine a Utah where hundreds of LGBT Utahans organized and showed up for Republican caucuses. Like Pride day, except hundreds marching into caucuses instead of around the City Building! Imagine a Utah where LGBT friendly delegates from these caucuses converged en mass into a convention hall where a very close Republican Senate nomination was being decided. Imagine that the candidates had to court our delegates because they held the balance of power....... Unlikely, but not impossible.

If LGBT people caught the vision of which party has the power in Utah, of which party can change things---we could make a difference. A huge difference. Instead of being patsy's to be ridiculed and scorned the LGBT community could be power brokers.

Republican, Democrat or whatever---register Republican and attend a caucus. Get elected a delegate and rock this state like its never been moved before. If all the work we do at the legislature could be channeled into producing Republican delegates---think of the power and success we would enjoy. No one ever stepped away from the table of power to make way for another group. In America if you want power and a say on how htings run, you better have money and votes. You better be organized and turn people out. If we could do that, our acceptance here in Utah would come very fast. It is up to us.

To Equality and all the other LGBT groups in Utah, help LCR/JMH Division (Jon M Huntsman) register LGBT people as Republicans, from Logan to St George. Best way to turn someone who doesn't like you is to help them NEED you. The LGBT community must have Republicans NEED them. Lets get delegates. Lets shake things up!

We should not forget all of the good Governor Huntsman has done in coming out in favor of Civil Unions and anti discrimination. In Utah, that is a real accomplishment. And he is popular on the national stage at this point as well.

First, I said 2 common issues. There were more issues, but I only listed the most common I heard from my discussions with the legislators. There is no fuzzy math.

Second, the adoption bill and employment/housing were run for 2 years, but for whatever reason all of these bills were lumped in by various groups and called the "common ground initiative" This "guilt by association" as all gay bills doomed them at the legislature.

Third,
The gay theme was mentioned over and over by the legislators I spoke with. I did not say I agreed with this. I was leaning toward agreement, but my conversations with others have swayed me that we need to approach with specific groups in mind. Of coarse also note that Log Cabin Republicans want all of these bills to pass, but we cannot make these are only issues. This will undermine our credibility with the party. It is tenuous enough as it is.

Fourth, convention. You are right, we could not stop Salt Lake county from adopting that terrible platform. However, we are not just a gay rights group and while we are unhappy about that change, we are pleased that we have members of our chapter serving on the county and state executive committees for the Republican party. Our hope is that with these elections we will be able to once again increase our influence in the party. We have been good friends with Governor Huntsman and he has been a friend to both us and the LGBT community at large. As more Republicans get to know us and our members they will be moved toward supporting equal rights for all of the LGBT community as well.

Of coarse, remember that the "dying" Republican Party in Salt Lake still controls more than half of the districts in the county and the legislature is still Republican enough, that Democrats make no difference in the leg process. I did not say that is was ok, only sating facts here.

1. You talked to 25 republicans and only got 2 reasons they voted no? that's fuzzy math.

2. The adoption, decimation, and people to sue bills were all at the state congress for 2008. The people to sue bill was also their for 2007. How many years are "enough time?"

3. equal rights for gay people will always get a gay theme to peoples who oppose them. Racists think that Martin Luthor King only cared about rights for blacks.

4. Why did log cabin decide to let the salt lake republican platform become anti-gay families? If you cant stop the dying salt lake county republicans from being anti-gay, how will you fix the republican congress?
